This is a drawing I started some time ago, and have tweaked and altered over time. It is now a small concertina book, with a blue leather cover and a red velvet ribbon to close it. Folded up it measures 9.5 x 8 cm.
It began life as a string of blots, made from liquid pencil (a paste of graphite) dropped randomly into water droplets on watercolour paper. I then pressed scrunched-up plastic wrap into it and left it to dry. The next step was drawing into it with pencil, finding small creatures and forms reminiscent of natural objects. The forms themselves suggested every next step. A little colour, using pencils, came at the end.

I think you could be right Poppytump – the odd dragon does seem to appear every now and then … Some strange little insects and other unidentifiable creatures too. It seems to be beyond my control, which makes working on it interesting!

Thank you so much Kim! No, I’m not represented by a gallery – I regard myself as a professional amateur artist, in that I do all my art as much and as often as I can, with a professional attitude. I work freelance, and am gradually winding that back and my art up, so am working towards becoming a full-time artist. I can see pluses and minuses in being represented by a gallery, the big plus would be incentive. Its something I need to look at seriously.

These are beautiful drawings…..I tried something similar a while ago with watercolour ink and fineliner, but I’m very intrigued by the “liquid pencil”. Do you make this yourself, or can you buy this paste from art stores? You’ve really inspired me to get drawing again 🙂

Thank you Alex – I do enjoy doing these drawings, never knowing quite what is going to happen. The liquid pencil is a commercial product, made by Derivan here in Australia. I see from your email address you are in the UK, but I don’t know if it is available there. It may be under another name. I get it in tubes, and it is slightly tinted with colour. I really use it just as a starting point to give me something to work with. Good luck with getting back to drawing!
