The piano key miniature series continues

Three more piano key miniatures are now finished – each one is a bit of a surprise to me, they take on their own characteristics as I add layers of paint, scratch back parts and intensify the colour. The oil paint adheres nicely to the ivory, but does need to be treated with some care – I inadvertently smudged the top right image, but in the end liked what it did. I am a great believer in serendipity and making the most of unexpected events. The imagery speaks of the natural world, but the middle one is more like a pile of brightly coloured fabrics … maybe.

I had originally intended framing three of these together, but now feel they need to be alone. Two of the ones I painted before have now been framed, in small, deep box frames. I am happy with them.

  1. You get an extra bonus with a deep box frame – that is, the shadow inside the box which will change all day depending on where the light is coming from.
    The new keys are beautifully vibrant. From musical notes, they are now visual notes.

    1. Yes, somehow I felt giving them that extra distance was important for setting them into their space, and the shadow is an important part of that. The photo is not particularly good, the paintings look a little washed out, but I was pleased with what my framer achieved. Visual notes – that’s nice!

  5. Anna, they look wonderful in their frames, little jewels. The three new keys make me feel like I’m looking into a secret space and discovering a whole new world. Almost as if I could transport myself into this magical world. I’m quite sure I would float through these beautiful color fields. Stunning work Anna!

    1. Thank you so much Sharon – I don’t know whereabouts in the world you are, but the two framed ones will be exhibited (assuming they are accepted!) in Sydney later this month and in July. If by chance you are anywhere in the vicinity, let me know and I can give you details!

  9. Becoming richer in their colourings…these are wonderful. I like the middle one too, and the one on the right reminds me of a party! Good luck with the show in Sydney. PS: As these ones are so rich, I’d like to see them enveloped in a lovely heavy silver elegant and simple frame and worn as a pendant. :O)

    1. You are right Janina, the colours are becoming richer – I think I am understanding the surface more with each one I do. I did think of the silver frame and use as a pendant – and I do think that would be a perfect way of displaying them – the only downside is that the surface is delicate, easily scratched. There may be a way around this though, maybe with a resin or varnish surface. I will investigate! Thank you!
